The Guide

One Mountain, Three Ways to Spend the Day

Every Mt Fuji day trip from Tokyo is one of three shapes: a coach day to the lakes at the mountain's foot, a loop through Hakone, or a private car. Here is how to choose, when to go, and what can close.

A Mt Fuji day trip from Tokyo is about 10 hours, and the choice that matters most is the side of the mountain: the coach days to Lake Kawaguchi put you at Fuji’s northern foot, the Hakone loops trade the close view for a ropeway over a volcanic valley and Lake Ashi, and a private car lets you choose. The classic Kawaguchiko day, Japan Visionary Tour’s, leaves Tokyo Station at 8:00 and Shinjuku at 8:30, is from US$49 a person in current promotion (usually US$82) and is rated 4.8 from 5,888 reviews (checked October 2026). Its calendar is on this page.

Map from Tokyo to Mt Fuji: Shinjuku in the east, a red dashed route west via Otsuki to Lake Kawaguchi and the Fuji Five Lakes north of Mt Fuji, with the Chureito Pagoda, Oshino Hakkai and the 5th Station marked; a blue dashed route south-west via Odawara to Hakone, Owakudani and Lake Ashi
Two directions out of Tokyo: west via Otsuki to the lakes at Fuji’s foot (red), or south-west via Odawara to Hakone (blue). Routes are schematic.

The three shapes of the day

The Kawaguchiko day is the classic. A coach takes about 2 hours from central Tokyo to the Fuji Five Lakes, and the stops are the views you have seen in photographs: Lake Kawaguchi and Oishi Park on its north shore, the spring-fed ponds of Oshino Hakkai, the thatched houses of Nenba, and the Chureito Pagoda above Fujiyoshida, 398 steps up. It is the cheapest guided way to stand at the mountain’s foot.

The Hakone loop goes the other way round the mountain. The most-reviewed one, TAIHOU’s, rides the Hakone Ropeway to Owakudani, a valley of sulphur vents, stops at Hakone Shrine and its torii standing in Lake Ashi, then crosses to Lake Yamanaka and Oshino Hakkai. Fuji is on the horizon from Hakone rather than in front of you. Kawaguchiko or Hakone? compares them stop by stop.

The private day is a car and an English-speaking driver for your group, with a route you can change on the day. It costs several times a coach seat for one person but narrows fast for three. Private day trips weighs it up.

The day the mountain hides

No tour can promise the view. Fuji City has counted every morning since 1991: the whole mountain was visible at 8 a.m. on about 62% of December mornings and 60% of January ones, and on about 10% in July. So the month is your best lever, and a date you can move is the second. The coach days here allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before; check the forecast two or three days out. The best time to see Mt Fuji has every month.

Doing it on your own

You do not need a tour to get there. Fujikyu and Keio highway buses leave Busta Shinjuku through the day, several an hour at busy times, for Kawaguchiko Station, about 1 hour 45 minutes, ¥2,200 or ¥2,000 booked online; the Fuji Excursion train runs direct from Shinjuku in just under 2 hours at its fastest, with every seat reserved. What a tour saves you is the day at the other end, where the viewpoints are far apart and linked by local buses. By train or bus has the details, and what it costs adds up both ways.

Winter: clearest, coldest, a few closures

December to February is Fuji’s clear season, and the white cap is on the summit. It is also below freezing by the lake on most mornings: Kawaguchiko’s January low averages -5.7°C. The road to the 5th Station can close on snow days, and in Hakone, sections of the ropeway close for maintenance from 7 to 24 December 2026 and from 12 January to 26 February 2027, with replacement buses. Winter day trips goes through what each tour does.

Staying a night instead

One day is enough for the classic views. A night at Lake Kawaguchi gives you the early morning, when the mountain is most often clear, and lets you add Hakone or the 5th Station without a 10-hour day.

How these facts were checked

Written 29 October 2026. Tour prices, ratings, review counts, itineraries, departure times and inclusions are from the GetYourGuide listings, read in US dollars on 29 October 2026. Visibility is from Fuji City’s “Record of Mt Fuji observations” (1991 to 2025, 8 a.m. readings); temperatures from the Japan Meteorological Agency’s 1991 to 2020 normals for Kawaguchiko; bus times and fares from Fujikyu Bus; the Fuji Excursion from Fujikyu Railway and JR East; the ropeway closures from Odakyu Hakone’s September 2026 notice; the Chureito Pagoda steps from the Fujiyoshida tourist guide; all read in October 2026. The routes on the map are schematic.
