Kawaguchiko or Hakone for a Day Trip?
Kawaguchiko or Hakone from Tokyo? For Mt Fuji itself, Kawaguchiko: the lakes sit at its foot. Hakone is a volcano valley, a ropeway and a lake cruise with Fuji in the distance. Compared, Oct 2026.
Choose Kawaguchiko if Mt Fuji is the reason for the trip, and Hakone if you want a day out with Fuji as the backdrop. Lake Kawaguchi and the other Fuji Five Lakes sit at the mountain’s northern foot, so the view fills the frame from the shore. Hakone is a separate volcanic area to the south-east: a ropeway over the steaming valley of Owakudani and a cruise on Lake Ashi, with Fuji on the horizon when the sky is clear. The classic Kawaguchiko day is from US$49 a person in current promotion (usually US$82) and the most-reviewed Hakone loop from US$55 a person in current promotion (usually US$76) (checked October 2026).

The Kawaguchiko day
The lakes day is about the mountain. Lake Kawaguchi is one of the five lakes on Fuji’s north side, and the classic shots are from its north shore at Oishi Park, from the spring-fed ponds of Oshino Hakkai, and, on some itineraries, from the Chureito Pagoda above Fujiyoshida, a war memorial completed in 1962 and reached by 398 steps. The day is long on the road and short on walking.
The Hakone day
Hakone is about the volcano you are standing on, not the one on the horizon. The ropeway crosses Owakudani, a valley of sulphur vents, and the pirate-ship cruise across Lake Ashi is an extra on the most-reviewed loop, about ¥1,700 paid on the day or booked as a package. That loop also stops at Hakone Shrine’s lakeside torii and, on the way back, at Lake Yamanaka and Oshino Hakkai. Mt Fuji appears from the ropeway and the lake on clear days. The flip side shows up in the reviews of the most-reviewed Hakone loop: among its newest 350, written in October 2026, 253 give five stars, and most of the low ones are about bad weather, long stretches on the coach, and a lunch stop with souvenir shopping.
