Doing it yourself

Map from Tokyo to Mt Fuji: Shinjuku in the east, a red dashed route west via Otsuki to Lake Kawaguchi and the Fuji Five Lakes north of Mt Fuji, with the Chureito Pagoda, Oshino Hakkai and the 5th Station marked; a blue dashed route south-west via Odawara to Hakone, Owakudani and Lake Ashi
The bus and the direct train take the red route to Lake Kawaguchi via Otsuki; routes are schematic.

The cheapest way to the lakes is the highway bus: ¥2,200 one way from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko Station, or ¥2,000 booked online, so ¥4,000 to ¥4,400 return. The Fuji Excursion train costs more: the Fujikyu part alone, from Otsuki to Kawaguchiko, is ¥1,170 plus a ¥600 express charge, on top of JR’s fare from Shinjuku; about ¥4,200 one way in all. At the lakes, add local buses between the viewpoints, and any ropeway or boat you ride. The train and bus guide sets out the timings.

The extras nobody prices in

  • Lunch. Most coach days leave it out; the guide suggests a place, or you bring your own. The Hato Bus day includes one.
  • Boats and ropeways. The Hakone pirate-ship cruise is about ¥1,700 on the day on the most-reviewed Hakone loop; the private days leave ropeway and cruise tickets to you.
  • Cash. Bring cash on the classic Kawaguchiko day: many local sellers take no cards.
  • The 5th Station. On the private Fuji and Hakone day, the 5th Station entrance fee, where it applies, is extra.
